tehachapi

we took a trip to tehachapi, a nearby mountain town, to see what it was like.  here we are in the car where we parked outside of the apple shed - a folksy little place where i got some fresh local apples and homemade fudge.  indy needed to nurse after the long car ride, so we sat together in the car across from the train tracks.

and this boy was soooo happy when a train, a looong train, went by.

"it's a diesel," said ezra.

indy gnawed on a delicious apple.

after that we headed over to the center of town where we found a railroad museum.

we opted not to go inside and instead just checked out the old signals they have on display and an old southern pacific box car.

there was a playground too with a mini train where ezra and i pretended to load coal in the tender before heading across the street to the train store.  we got a couple of pieces of track that we don't have and a mini diesel engine like the one we saw outside the apple shed.

i would've like to walk around a bit more and check out the local shops, but the boys declared it was time to go home.  they weren't interested in the yarn i was looking for.  i'm outnumbered i am.

it's okay though, it was another scorching hot day even in the higher altitude of tehachapi.  the scenery driving home was pretty and the clouds are higher in the sky these days - things are changing.

we had to stop for another nursing session at murray farms where we'll head back soon to get our pumpkins.  we sat here in these funny looking hand chairs while ezra jumped in a big bucket of corn.  nearby under a hay bale a king snake slithered out as a little mouse scampered by.  fortunately it wasn't a rattle snake or else i would've jumped out of my chair and ran to the car.  california king snakes are the good ones - they eat rattlesnakes for dinner!  thanks to my brother, the snake expert, i know cool facts like that.  it was a fun day for us all with just the right amount of excitement - a train, a snake, and some sweets.  the mountain scenery was pretty and i would like to go back to find some yarn next time!

  1. What a coincidence. I was about to blog about our little train stop visit too! My kids know the difference too between Diesel and Steam and they say it every time they see one. I love it. =)
