yarn along

finished booties for a friend's baby

glitter glue monoprint from 'side by side'
finally~ a yarn along.  i've been knitting and reading like always.  that never stops.  but, the blog has been hard to get to with the business of raising boys.  and a broken camera and old iphone that won't support instagram anymore and always dies are not inspiring to shoot with.  thankfully, with the help of my mom here for two weeks, i am finding time to do a little more of what i love and fix up some iphone photos as best i can.

i was so excited to find this in the new release section of our library yesterday and am excited to do the above photographed craft today involving one of ezra's favorite mediums - glitter glue.  it looks like just the right amount of wow result with little effort on my part.  in other words - it's attainable under the circumstances.

this book has made me relax once again into what i believe is right for my child and for most boys out there going to school before they're ready.  if there's one thing i know from teaching first grade for eight years in the public school system, it's that elementary school is designed for girls not boys.  one must not only look at their aptitudes but at their different levels of maturity in deciding whether or not traditional schooling is right for them at such a young age.  here is one of my favorite passages from the book that defines my underlying philosophy as a teacher and a parent:

"the 'wisdom' of forcing a child's intellect has little basis either in research or in common sense.  usually, stimulating anything to go faster simply because it can go fast will merely insure an earlier breakdown.  this is implicitly true whenever we try to rush nature, and it is especially true in the development in children.  children should be permitted to 'unfold' as naturally as a flower." p.81

knitting:  owl milo with delicious malabrigo rios yarn in a warm autumn shade of orange for stella

finished knitting: a pair of booties from this book for nicola's baby - i chose a light yarn for the warm weather in miami - ahhh i look back at those posts and wish we were there (will i do the same thing wherever we are next?)

thinking of knitting:  a shawl for me with the yummy malabrigo silky merino that i started winding last night.  fall is in the air, even if it is in the 90s here.  it's cooler in the house in the evenings.  ha!

looking forward to catching up with all the other knitters over at ginny's yarn along.

  2. Lovely colorful yarns! I didn't get around to a yarn along post today (I'm assured that i'm only hours away from labour and trying to deal with all that that involves!) but wanted to let you know that knitting up the papoose pattern you gave me is keeping me very well occupied this exciting week!

  3. I love that quote :) Friends of mine who have boys struggle with the same thing. Boys and girls need such different approaches at that age.
That owl cabling is amazing! What a great effect! And the booties are simply perfect :)What a lovely gift they will make.

  4. Oh I loved reading this Anushka! I am glad you are finding time for your knitting (and such lovely knitting at that) and your reading. Wonderful wonderful quote and I will have to look into that book, though I think you've told me all I need to know about it. I have to say, that quote holds true for all children, not just boys. My daughter is just now getting reading, at almost 8 years old. She still has trouble with other things that are deemed age appropriate for her age. I trust in nature, I trust in her, and I know her time will come. Certainly though, the public school system is not made for her either (which is why she is in montessori--which has proved to be a perfect choice so far). I hope that other parentss are empowering their children, like you, to be exactly who they need to be at the pace that nature has set for them!!

    1. thank you for your kind support dear mj. i always think of you and your kids and how lucky they have been in their schooling path thus far. it would be wonderful if my children could also enter later into a montessori program of which i'm also very fond of. i went to a montessori school for my first years of schooling. and the book i quoted says that the best way to enter children 'late' into school is in a non graded school - like montessori. you would love the book. i'm surprised you haven't already read it. i think you've already followed their advice knowingly.

  5. Your knitting is wonderful. I love to knit but I'm not terribly good at it and anything larger than a hat seems to takes me eternity. Interesting quote about schooling as well, we already have to apply to preschool now if we want our little guy to go next year just before turning three... but we may wait one more year too! It will only be two days for a couple hours but it's still hard to imagine.
