a day at the museum with the boys

michael has had fridays off during his current rotation and i successfully rallied the boys to get out of the house where things have been a little topsy turvy.  my work has been obstructed daily by the demands of my five year old trying to blockade his eight month old intrepid baby brother.  i thought before we spend another day trying to teach lessons of tolerance which are mostly stressful moments for us parents to practice peace and control our tempers, let's get outside and visit the kern county museum!  a friend of my friend shoshanna's said it was worth going to and it was!  we spent the first hours outside walking the property where a little town has been reconstructed from the mining times of kern county.  they used actual pieces from old buildings in the area to restore them and make this piece of history come to life for us to walk through and peer behind the glass into the houses, stores, school, jail, church, and other community buildings.  it was a great day for this as the temperatures have dropped suddenly from 80 to 60 degrees outside.  the boys were off to a great start with ezra hugging and kissing indy in his stroller.  and by the end of our day in the children's discovery museum that is onsite, the boys had the whole place to themselves (one of the benefits of homeschooling) and ezra let indy touch everything and participate in his role playing (did you see what a willing little student indy was?!).  i still had to be on my toes to make sure the little one didn't crawl off the stage there at the end.  this was a great outing.  i look forward to having a car again soon to be able to do more things out of the house with the boys in the future.  this will be imperative for me to continue homeschooling ezra i believe.  otherwise i will be one of those moms who say to homeschooling moms, "i have no idea how you do it.  i would go out of my mind!"  it really does help to get them away from all the stuff that is "mine" for a while and share some public space together.

  1. I love museums like that. It's wonderful that you were all able to be out and about as a family, I'm sure Ezra will not forget the fun he had!

  2. What a fabulous kind of museum - ours are normally all indoors and stuffy in the UK, I'd love to walk around somewhere like that with the kids. I think they would love it too.
